The Story Behind Revival Rooms
How it came to be...
For the last 9+ years I have worked in a well-known Manufacturing Plant in Limerick holding different roles on the Preventative Maintenance crew, Engineering support, Technician, trainer, mentor, part of the Sports & Social club and over 14 years experience with First Aid and emergency response. Throughout my time there working 12hr shifts, changing from days to nights on a monthly basis I have seen first-hand, the negative effects stress has on sleep, mood, joint pain, back pain and overall well-being.
The first time I was introduced to the concept of Reduced Environmental Stimulation Therapy (REST) flotation, or ‘sensory deprivation’ as it was called until recently, was back in 1999 when ‘The Simpsons’ aired a satirical episode revolving around an out-of-body experience gained through the use of an ‘Isolation tank’, now more commonly known as Float Tanks.
It wasn’t until the last few years that it truly piqued my interest, with celebrities and sports persons such as Joe Rogan -Podcaster, Comedian and UFC Commentator, John Lennon - Iconic singer/songwriter, Wayne Rooney – Man United Footballer as well as Jim Carrey and Robin Williams endorsing the use of float tanks as highly beneficial and life-changing. I decided to research the topic further to see what all the fuss was about.
Having suffered from several mental health issues from my mid teens and through my 20’s, and several years of Anti-Depressant and Anxiety medications, also suffering from a form of Arthritis called Ankylosing Spondylitis which had me in crippling pain for years. After a prolonged period of poor sleep quality (average 4hrs per night) over the course of a year in 2018 I decided to investigate natural ways to improve my sleep, ease my pain and improve my wellbeing and eliminate the need for pharmaceutical medications, during this research I kept coming across the idea of flotation.
It wasn’t until January 2019 that I booked my first float in Zero Gravity Float in Co. Cork as this was the closest establishment to offer the service. I wasn’t sure what to expect but from the overwhelmingly positive posts/articles and reviews I felt that I would gain some benefit from the experience, a benefit I wholly underestimated.
The float itself was extremely relaxing, calming and liberating. I had never experienced anything like it before, floating in a soundproof, lightproof Pod with Epsom salt saturated water, with the air and water heated to skin temperature making it impossible to distinguish where my body, the air or the water began. I reached a state of what I can only describe as a conscious sleep. After my session was over, I left the Float centre refreshed and revived. The most notable difference was the pain I normally feel in my back and neck was gone. That night was the first night I had a deep restful 8hrs sleep in as far as I could remember, I woke up refreshed and in high spirits. This restful sleep continued for several nights after and had a hugely positive knock-on effect both in work life and outside it.
In February 2019 during a float, I came up with the idea of Revival Rooms and over the next two years and every day since, I engulfed myself in the flotation industry, travelling to the float centres in Cork, Galway, Dublin, Kildare, Killarney, London, Barcelona, and other locations in Europe, researching the industry and reviewing the science behind the concept. I spent hours speaking with float centre owners learning about the industry, the running of a Float canter, ideal location criteria and layout, customer interactions and the different issues that can arise, installation of new equipment and maintenance, marketing and so on. I have brought family and numerous friends floating all around Ireland to gauge their experience, what benefits they’ve seen from Floating and their overall experience from ‘meet and greet’ at reception, the introduction to floating, the float itself and post float relaxation before departing the float centre. Each conversation cemented my determination to bring Flotation to Limerick and grow the industry.
I created Revival Rooms to help others experience the Revival I had , I’m proud to have gotten through it and without Floatation Therapy, I do not know where I would be today.
